Local Independent Online News Publishers is partnering with email magazine Brooklyn Based to offer NYC metro-area members reduced-price access to the NYC Indie Media Camp, a one-day workshop for budding and veteran online publishers.
The Indie Media Camp, to be held Nov. 13, 2013, in Gowanus, Brooklyn, will be a daylong conference helping indie online publishers and bloggers improve their sites and businesses practices. The day-long event, organized by Brooklyn Based with LION as a supporting sponsor, will cover everything from taking professional photos to pricing sponsored content.
Regular event registration is $150, but LION Publishers is offering a significant member discount — the first 10 LION members to sign up can register using the promo code "LION" for only $65. Any LION members to register after that will continue to receive the early bird price of $99 when you enter the code "99". Register for the event at indiemediacamp.eventbrite.com.
Two LIONs will serve as panelists at the event. LION Advisory Council member Steven Waldman, founder of Beliefnet and The Brooklyn Game, will be sitting beside Gothamist Publisher Jake Dobkin to discuss the magic formula that makes a website successful. NedBerke, founder of Brooklyn news websites Sheepshead Bites and Bensonhurst Bean and a member of LION's Board of Directors, will join with other successful publishers, including Josh Alberston of Curbed Media Group, to discuss pricing and selling advertising and sponsored content.
The full schedule for the Indie Media Camp can be found here.
The event is the brainchild of Brooklyn Based Publisher Nicole Davis and Editor-in-Chief Annaliese Griffin. The daily email magazine, which launched in 2007, delivers news, events and features that keep its readers connected to Brooklyn life. Brooklyn Based also produces events, including Wedding Crashers, a wedding fair and expo. This is Indie Media Camp's inaugural year.
"Running your own blog or news site often means navigating uncharted waters between paid and editorial content, and acquiring skills you never dreamed you'd need as a writer. This was the inspiration behind Indie Media Camp — a day where independent online publishers could share their collective knowledge, and we're excited to have the entrepreneurial journalists of LION Publishers as a supporting sponsor," said Davis.
"We're pleased to sponsor NYC Indie Media Camp and give our members the opportunity to attend," said Dylan Smith, chairman of LION's Board of Directors and publisher of TucsonSentinel.com. "Healthy discussions and the sharing of best practices are at the core of LION's mission, and are vital to rebuilding the news industry."
Local Independent Online News Publishers is a nonprofit national network of the CEOs of online news organizations, dedicated to fostering sustainability and excellence in local news. Launched in 2012, LION Publishers recently held its first national conference, building on the success of the three-year run of Block by Block summits of local news operators. With support from the Patterson Foundation, LION has grown to nearly 115 members in its first year.
